Temple Shalom is an egalitarian, multigenerational congregation that welcomes diversity, spirituality and community. We value Jewish living and the communal principles of Tzedakah and Tikun Olam

LIBRARY

The Tena and Benjamin Finkelstein Memorial Library offers a collection of more than 2,500 books with Jewish content, including wonderful choices for all age groups. The strength of the Library is very much due to Janet Quint, who functioned as the Temple’s librarian for many years. All Temple members are entitled to library borrowing privileges.Click

MISSION

Temple Shalom serves as a House of Prayer (Bet Tefilah), a House of Assembly (Bet Knesset), and a House of Study (Bet Midrash) in which the spectrum of Conservative Jewish expression is cultivated, protected and nurtured.

VALUES

Tzedakah, translated as "doing the right thing," refers to every aspect of our lives and actions.

Tikun Olam is translated as "mending the world" and reminds us that meeting the needs of the world is God’s work, endowing our lives with holiness.

We therefore strive to:

1) Educate adults and children in Judaism’s rich heritage and contemporary significance, sharing Jewish rituals and values from generation to generation.

2) Provide a warm spiritual environment for the observance of Jewish tradition and the celebration of all our members’ life cycle events.

3) Embrace K’lal Yisrael (Unity of the Jewish Community) by strengthening our link to worldwide Jewry and the State of Israel.

4) Comfort and care for others with compassionate humility through the fulfillment of Mitzvot (Commandments) and Gemilut Chasadim (Deeds of Lovingkindness).

5) Articulate and respond to the call for social justice and compassion by exercising concern for the benefit of the local and world community

HISTORY

Temple Shalom of Milton was founded in 1944 as Jewish Bostonians expanded beyond their existing population centers in Mattapan and Roxbury (read Hillel Levine's book to learn about the history of Jews in Boston). As the Jewish population of greater Boston has continued to shift over time, Temple Shalom has today become the focus of Jewish community for not just Milton, but a new generation of Jews living in Dorchester, Hyde Park, and Roslindale. Our members also come from other nearby communities such as Quincy and Canton.

NEW HOME

The Temple has a goal to build a smaller spiritual home that will be more efficient to operate and to have an endowment fund for assisting with our finances.  We have put forth a zoning change proposal to the Town of Milton that, if approved, will enable us to commence this important project and have a more secure future.  We will keep the Temple community apprised of our progress.
